Loop no. 1 (Descent)

2022
Nava Dance Theater’s Unrehearsed Artist Residency Virtual Showing

Descent began as a solo using traditional craft forms from my ancestral lineage as materials from which to create scores, phrase work, and improvisation. In particular, I used paintings created by my paternal grandmother depicting scenes from mythology or history. Descent considers the place that these mythologies and histories have for me, and what stories are formed when queer bodies inhabit these landscapes. This work developed into an exploration of point, binary, line, spectrum, and orbit as choreographic methods to interrogate the underlying question of belonging within mythology and history. These methods were selected in part because of their relevance in the visual arts traditions that were source material in the first phase of research, as well as in movement within time and space. I arrived at this area of choreographic inquiry through my experience of intersecting identities that position me outside of binaries, and which point to the inherent falsity in the binaries. Rather than understanding these identities as being “marginalized” by a binary’s inability (or refusal) to accommodate them, these identities themselves enact the refusal.
